How it works

Mathematical strands

Maths Builder lessons are provided sequentially in six key mathematical strands, from Level 0 to Level 6. The strands are:

·         Number and Probability
·         Patterns and Algebra
·         Data
·         Measurement
·         Space and Geometry
·         Working Mathematically.

‘Working Mathematically’ is incorporated into the other five strands because it helps children develop their capacity to reason and work mathematically.

Worksheets and other learning resources

Each mathematical strand in Maths Builder is taught through a series of Worksheets and Resources.

Worksheets provide the core curriculum material for Maths Builder,
and are arranged sequentially through each 12-month level, from Level 0 to Level 6.

A wide range of related resources support the Worksheets and the teaching and learning process, including a Course Overview for teachers, and a rich range of learning activities and interactive games for students.

On one page of the Maths Builder website, teachers can access every resource they need for a lesson, move between strands and skill levels, view each resource on the computer monitor or interactive whiteboard, or print them for students.

Every learning resource is designed to engage and motivate students, encouraging them to practise and master new mathematical skills. As they build their understanding of each mathematical concept, children also build self-confidence.

The wonderful cartoons that illustrate Maths Builder give the program its life and personality. They capture each child’s imagination and make the lessons meaningful by providing social, cultural and environmental context to each new skill as it is introduced. Maps and photographs are also used to increase the relevance of lessons.

Remediation

Diagnostic tests and Cross-reference identify any learning gap that a child may have in mathematics, and specify the learning resources that will help to resolve each gap. Maths Builder is an extremely useful resource for providing remedial mathematics tuition to both primary school and high school students.

Extension

Extension sheets help advanced students extend learning without needing assistance from a teacher or parent.

At home

Parents can use Maths Builder to guide their children in homework. They can also use the Diagnostic Tests and Cross-reference tool to assess their child’s progress – helping their child to either remedy a learning gap, consolidate learning with Interactive games, or extend their mathematical knowledge with Extension sheets.

English as a Second Language

Maths Builder uses the international language of mathematics and Voice-over to teach English as a second language. Voice-over is a feature of Language cards and Interactive Games and allows students hear the instructions on the game or card spoken in English. Using Voice-over, students can improve their English speaking and reading skills, while excelling in Mathematics.

‘On Your Mark Maths’ textbooks

The online Maths Builder program is fully compatible with the ‘On Your Mark Maths’ textbooks (Level 0 to Level 6). The textbooks contain all the Worksheets in Maths Builder, as well as a teaching schedule that guides teachers through each 12 month level of the curriculum.

Students can use the ‘On Your Mark Maths’ books to complete Worksheets in front of the interactive whiteboard, or for homework. Teachers can apply the ‘On Your Mark Maths’ teaching schedule to Maths Builder, or design their own teaching program.

Video tutorials

Videos that give an overview on how the Maths Builder program works, and provide tutorials on how to make the most of each teaching resource, are provided on the home page of Maths Builder, as well as in the About drop-down menu.
